GREAT SAVING IN COSTS
(Received November 22, 11.5 p.m.)
LONDON, Nov. 22 The Daily Mail says that in order to inspect oil-electric Diesel engined locomotives capable of drawing 900 passengers at a speed of 70 miles an hour, the President of the Board of Trade, Mr. Walter Runciman, visited Armstrong-Whitworth's works at Newcastle and is to report on the prospects to the Prime Minister.
It is claimed that the installation of these engines, which also are applicable to manufacturing, would revolutionise travel and save the railway companies £22,000,000 a year. The locomotives, four of which have been ordered for the Buenos Aires railways, resemble huge aluminium boxes. The driver, standing behind plate-glass windows, easily controls the 1700 horse-power engine by pressing a self-starter and pulling a lever. The fuel cost is 8d an hour.
The engines can be utilised day and night continuously. One was tested for six months. It. ran 25,000 miles and was worked 17 hours a day. The total cost of fuel and lubricating was £B7.
