SPORT OF CYCLING

COMBINED EVENTS DECIDED

FOUBISTER'S GOOD PERFORMANCE

Members of all five local amateur cycling clubs were provided with competitions (Juring the past week. The Auckland. Takapuna and Tamaki Clubs combined to conduct a series of events at the Lvnndale track on Saturday, while the Papatoetoe and Manukau Clubs held races at the Papatoetoe Stadium banked

Outstanding among the performers during the past week was R. G. Foubister, who represented the Dominion at the last Olympic Games in the road event. For the Papatoetoe Club's three miles handicap he made a post entry and was handicapped on a mark 50 yards behind the two scratch riders, the brothers, S. and I). N. Pinfold. In spite of the fact that he gave the five limit men over a lap start he successfully overcame the handicap and, catching the field with five of the required 18 laps still to be ridden, went into the lead, and over the final circuit led a strung out field to win by two clear lengths from A. Godfrey, 230 yds., of the Papatoetoe Club. In the Manukau Chib's events on Saturday Foubister displayed his rare ability at handicap distance track racing when, accompanied off scratch by H. V. Gordon and H. R. Dwight, he paced it out with his co-markers and at two Japs to go was at the head of the twelve finalists in the two miles handicap. He won from Gordon by a clear length, while Dwight filled third position. His time of Am 45 4-5s for the two miles, is a record for this season, while his three miles ride at the Papatoetoe Club meeting of 7m 12 l-5s is better than any produced last season in local racing. E. D. Andrews, who has been racing since 1926, starting off 25yds., gained a popular win in the one mile race at Papatoetoe in 2m 21 3-5s from a field of 15 riders. At the combined clubs' meeting at the Lynndale track, C. Johnson, 60yds.; won the three miles in 7m 35s from the scratch man, I. C. Laloli, to gsin his first win this season. C. Gooder's winning time off 55yds. for the mile of 2m 21 2-5s was a splendid ride on an unbanked surface which, was silghtly dusty and treacherous on the bends.
