STOCKS AND SHARES

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE

, COLONIAL SUGARS RECOVER

, Although dealing on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday showed an improvement on the previous day, conditions in the investment market were not very active. Trice movements were irregular. Interest was slack in Government loans, with sellers predominating. Only 1937 per cent bonds and stock and 1927-41 5J per cent stock were sought, offers remaining steady at the previous rates of £96 15s and £96, respectively. Both issues of 1937 5£ bonds were quoted at £IOO 5s and the September stock at £IOO 2s 6d, but the market displayed no interest. The few movements in banks were, with ono exception, downward. In cases in which support eased, sellers showed an inclination to follow the market. New Zealands were secured at the reduced 45s 9d, a declino of 3d. Inquiry closed at 45s 6d, an easing of a similar amount on the previous day, with sellers continuing to quote 465. Unions, on the other hand, continued rally, changing hands Is higher at £7 16s. The market, however, closed rather easier than on Monday with buyers Is lower at £7 14s and sellers asking 2s 6d less at £7 17s 6d. Levels were not materially altered in insurance. New Zealands were unchanged on sale at 435. Other sections of the market were quiet, the only conspicuous movement being the partial recovery of Colonial Sugars. After casing £3 17s 6d to £45 last week, these shares gained 25s on sale at £46 5s yesterday. Some pressure to sell, however, was indicated in reduced quotations, sellers lowering their limits 20s to £47. Buyers

were prepared to give £45 10s for more, on advance on previous offers of ss. The only other business in the miscellaneous section was a deal in British Tobaccos at 31s 9d, a rise of Is. Leading mining shares were firm. Alexanders gained another 3d in business at 22s 9d, and support continued for Blackwaters at 20s. Okaritos eased a penny in two transactions at 9s Id, and there was a similar shading in Waihi Junctions, which were released at 3s 6d. This price was available for more, but holders subsequently remained firm at 3s 7d. An advance of. 5d was registered in Mount Lyells, .which changed hands at 20s sd.
