AFFAIRS OF COUNTY

ACTIVITIES IN FRANKLIN

PROPOSAL TO DEEPEN CREEK

[from our own correspondent]

PUIyEKOHE, Monday Eight owners of land along the Whangamaire Stream, in the Karaka district, waited on the Franklin County Council at its meeting to-day and requested that the creek from its estuary for about two miles upstream be deepened' and cleared of growth and willows,' the work to be carried out as unemployment relief. The deputation stated that the creek had gradually silted and become overgrown, with the result that much adjoining land was subject to flooding. It was pointed out that the council already had camps for the employment of 187 men from the city on relief works in the county, but had only 121 men in them, the men not coming forward as expected.

It was decided to suggest to settlers along the creek from Patumahoe to tidal water that a drainage area be formed, with the council as tho controlling authority in order to have the deepening and clearing carried out and the creek afterwards kept clear of growth, the initial work to be done-by relief workers. An offer by 18 ratepayers at Awhitu to contribute £3B toward the cost of surfacing with shell Irwin's Flat, on the main Manukau Heads road, wag referred to the riding member, Mr. C. Dickey. It was explained that £3B would not quite coyer half the cost, the length of road being nine chains.

The clerk was instructed to do all possible to expedite the raising of the special loan of £450 for metalling Lewis Road, Karaka.

Tho contract for carting 4500 cubic yards of shingle on to the Pokeno-Paeroa and Great South Roads from deposits at Mangatawhiri during the coming 12 months was let to Mr. W. Hosking at £592, this being the lowest tender received.

A survey of the new line of road from Kaiaua to Miranda was submitted by the county engineer, Mr. J. F. McArthur. Is was decided that the owners of the land through which the route passes be supplied with details of the survey.
