TRANSPORT SERVICES
TAKAPUNA RACECOURSE
AMOUNT OF COMPETITION
At a sitting of tho No. 2 Transport Licensing Authority yesterday, 35 applications by taxi-cab proprietors and three by omnibus companies for permission to operate services between tho Takapuna racecourse and the Devonport ferry wharf during the next race meeting were granted. The chairman, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, presided, Mr. E. Blomfield and Mr. T. Hanna being associated with him. A considerable amount of evidence was heard regarding the demand for taxi-cabs during the race meeting. Evidence was given by taxi proprietors and the omnibus companies, which were the Waitemata Bus and Transport Company, the Cheltenham Bus Company and the Birkenhead Bus Company. It was suggested that tho services should be left to North Shore proprietors, as it was considered doubtful whether the patronage was sufficient to warrant outside competition. r lhe authority found that the evidence regarding the amount of competition was somewhat conflicting. All the applications would be granted, but no others in respect of the approaching races would be admitted. The wholo question regarding competition would be reviewed when applications were heard in connection with tho following race meeting.
