UTILISATION IN FOUR WAYS

THIS WEEK'S CONTEST

There is probably no fruit that is such a general favourite as the banana. All the year round it is obtainable, and it lends itself to a variety of uses. It is not generally known, however, that there arc ways in which it should not bo taken. For instance it is frequently used in making sandwiches, but, as a matter of fact, bread is one of the last things that the banana should be taken with, as it contains so much starch in itself without the additional starch of . the bread. It is best taken alone, either some timo before or after a meal. When given to children bananas should bo mashed, as swallowed in, lumps (as they usually are by them) they aro most indigestible. Taken with orange or lemon juice they aro exceedingly good and nutritious. Tho competition this week will bo for four ways of using thcra.

COMPETITION No. 19 First prize, £1 Is; second prize, 10s 6d. Four Ways of Using Bananas, these to include a Hot and a Cold Sweet, a Savoury, and a Preserve combined with other Iruit.

Competitors will assist by sending in their entries as early in the week as possible instead of toward the end. When the numbers of competitors are very large, as they usually are, it is difficult to cope with them both in the indexing and in judging. As before, the prizes offered are one guinea for the first and half a guinea for the second. Other meritorious entries will be accepted at the rate of 2s 6d each and published. The judging will be carried out by Mrs. A. M. Mann, lady demonstrator at the Auckland Gas Company's cookery department.

Recipes may be written or typed. If not typed, they should be written clearly in ink on one side of the paper only. The name and full address of the competitor, including street and house number, should be written on a separate slip of paper. Entries should be addressed: New Zealand Herald, Auckland, and competitors are asked to writo on the outside of the envelope "Cookery Competition No. 19." Entries will be received up to the last mail on Friday night, November 25, and the announcement of tho winners will be made on "Wednesday, November 30.
