"THE IMPOSSIBLE"

ROMANCE OF THE BIBLE Under the appropriate title of " The Impossible " the British and Foreign Bible Society has issued the latest of the series of special reports which it produces annually ii\ popular form. Beautifully illustrated and admirably printed the little volume again comes from the gifted pen of Edwin W. Smith, the society's literary superintendent. With the grace and distinction that characterises all his literary work Mr. Smith recounts incidents and illustrations drawn from many lands to show the living power of the Bible to-day. There is scarce a country in the world, save perhaps Russia, where the agents of this society are riot active, and the experiences of very many of them are rich in human interest. From the wealth of material that comes into the society's possession in letters and papers from all quarters Mr. Smith has made a happy selection, and lias woven all into a connected whole. The strange happenings 111 strange lands which he discloses would provide material enough to suggest a score of romances, and all are touched with the author's insight and imagination. The volume contains only a little more than 100 pages, but it is a clear cut panorama of a world wide enterprise and gives life and form to the society's siaiistics which, without such illumination, might be more massive than impressive. Such facts as the society's circulation last year of more than 10,500,000 scriptures in over 600 different languages will come home with a new meaning to any reader of this attractive little hook. Its authenticated records constitute a powerful apologetic for the Christian faith, and convey a message of assured optimism in these none-too-cheer-ful times. "Tho Impossible." ;i iecord of the work nf the British and Foreign Bible Society. (British and Foreign Bible Society, Bondon.)
