STOCKS AND SHARES

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE

SUPPORT FOR WAIHIS DECLINES

There were fluctuations in the investment market on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. The volume of business ivas not large, and leading investments wpro prominent in the day's turnover. 'A weakening in buying support in most sections was accompanied by firm inquiry for a wide range of Government securities. Buyers lifted their offers 5s to £96 for both 1933 and 1939 per cent bonds and stock without locating any sellers. A similar improvement was registered in inquiry for 1937 5i per cent bonds, which were in demand at £IOO. Holders came back 5s on the previous day's quotation to £IOO ss, without placing any parcels. The February issue of stock was again vainly sought at £99 15s, while sale of the September issue unaltered at £IOO was followed with a renewal of support at the previous day's level of £99 15s. Although holders in several banks were firmer, offers on the whole were a shade easier. Business was done in Unions 2s 9d dearer at £7 14s 6d, two parcels being placed at that figure, but subsequent inquiry closed 6d easier than on Tuesday at ill 12s 6d. Holders quoted more a similar amount cheaper at £7 16s 6d. New Zealands were sought unchanged at 45s 3d, fellers wanting '6d on Tuesday's price at 455. Insurances were quoted at late rates with the exception of New Zealands, for which sellers asked 43s 9d, a rise of 3d. Fair inquiry continued for loan and agency without any marked alterations. Auckland Gas were a little firmer and shippings were in slightly belter demand. General investments were slow, with sellers largely predominating. Although available 10s cheaper at £4B ss, Colonial Sugars remained unsupported. A loss of 9d was registered in Wilsons Cements on sale at 325, but there was a subsequent improvement with dealing at 32s 3d. Woohvorths (N.Z.) preference were taken 6d dearer at 28s, no further supplies being available. * "

A\ hile support in the mining section improved- for Alexanders and Blackwaters, Waihis continued to react and lose ground. Early business at the current pride of 19s was followed by an afternoon transaction at 18s 9d. For more buyers reduced their offers to 18s 7d, holders quoting 18s lOd. Junctions were steady. Alexanders were sought l s 6d dearer at 225, and offers for Blackwaters were lifted Is to 19s. Holders in neither case showed any interest. Golden Dawns shaded a penny on sale at 5s 2d, and Golden Points were dealt in unaltered at 4£d.
