NEW YACHT BUILT

TECHNICAL COLLEGE WORK

EXPERIENCE FOR BOYS

A new 14ft. yacht, somewhat similar to boats of the Wakatere class, but reallybuilt to the design of the American "Snipe" class, has been constructed at the Seddon Memorial Technical College. It is to be offered for sale and the proceeds placed toward the physical education fund of the college. The boat, which has been named the Wai-iti, was designed by Mr. J. Brooke, a member of the college staff, and was built by Mr. W. Gemmell, another member of tftb staff, who was assisted by boys from the woodwork classes in their spare time. The boys thus engaged gained valuable experience in boatbuilding. The boat has a length of 14ft. 4in. and a beam of 4ft. 6in. Her frames are of Southland beech, and the bottom and sides of heart of kauri. The deck is covered with canvas and a special feature is a small hatch at the stern, providing space for an outboard motor. The blocks and a new type of brass fittings for mast and sails were all made at the college. There are watertight compartments both fore and aft, and it is claimed that safety, even in fairly heavy weather, is a feature of the craft.
