ACTIVITIES OF BURGLARS

TWO HOUSES AND OFFICE MONEY TAKEN FROM BEDROOM Two suburlan houses were entered bv thieves on Saturday, the robbery in one case being' carried out while the occupants were in bed. Although the intruder was detected, he was able to make his escape. About 4 a.m., an intruder entered iha home of Dr. E. H. Bryant, at 139 Great South Road, through a side door, which was not locked, and searched the bedrooms. Dr. Bryant was awakened by a torch flashing about his room, but thought for a few moments that tha light was due to the headlights of a passing motor-car. It was only when the man was leaving the room that he realised that he was being robbed. Before Dr. Bryant could leave his bed, the man had dashed into the passage and out of the front door, which he had left open to facilitate his escape if he aroused anyone. Dr. Bryant unfortunately was unable to obtain a very good view of tha intruder.

The thief secured £l4 10s from clothing in the bedroom. He was apparently only in search of money, as no valuables were touched. A thief entered the house of Mr, Samuel Oldfield, at 14 Mount Hobson Road, some time between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday and stole a quantity of cutlery and two fountain pens. Mr. Oldfield was absent at the time and when he returned home he found that the rooms had been ransacked. Entrance apparently had been gained by opening & window leading to the sitting rcom. For the second time within the past two or three weeks the premises of Grey and Menzies, Limited, aerated water and cordial manufacturers, Eden Crescent, ha» been broken into.

On the arrival of the staff on Saturday morning it was discovered that the main office and the private office of the general manager, Mr. R. -Menzies; had been ransacked, and that the back door was wida open. About £2 was stolen from petty cash drawers in the office, and the keys of the drawers were also removed. It is r.iot known how entrance was effected. On the first occasion the office was petty' cash and postage stamps stolen. . • - - ■
