OPOTIKI FIRE LOSS

destruction of block OWNER A HEAVY LOSER [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] OPOTIKI, Saturday A firo which broke out at 9 a.m. today on the property of Mr. G. Shalfoon, Woodlands, Opotiki, completely destroyed a block of buildings containing a billiard room with a full-sized table; a garage, and a wash-house, all under one roof. A bucket brigade of neighbours saved the house, which is about 30ft. away, and was badly blistered by heat. The fire started in the wash-house and clothes in the copper and on the floor were burned.

Tho insurance is held by the Standard Office. Mr. Shalfoon estimates his loss at £3OO over the insurance, the billiard table not being covered. His sedan car, which is usually in the garage, was fortunately in town at the time of the fire.

DAMAGE TO LARGE SHED BUILDING AT PUKEKOHE [from our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Sunday The Pukekohe fire brigade was called out about O a.m. to-day to a fire which damaged a large unoccupied shed in IlaU Street, formerly 'used as a blacksmith's shop. The side walls and roof were of corrugated iron, but tfee front and rear were of wood. The brigade extinguished the flames in about 20 minutes. The building is owned by the estate of the late Mr. Daniel Goodwin. It is in the hands of the Public Trustee And is believed to be insured. Damage was caused to the extent of about £3O.

OUTBREAK IN WORKROOM SEWING MACHINES DAMAGED A workroom on the first floor of a maimer's shop at 3A Ivarangahape Road was extensively damaged by fire at 4.42 a.m. yesterday. Two engines from the central fire station answered the call, the outbreak being subdued without great difficulty. Other rooms in the premises, which are occupied by Mr. J. Russell and owned by Mr. J. Faulder, of Orakei Road, Remuera, were not damaged seriously. The fire evidently began in the workroom, in which there were two sewing machines, both being damaged. Details of the insurances were not available last evening, but it was.stated that the contents of the premises were not insured.
