RICHMOND CRUISING CLUB RACE TO ISLINGTON BAY The Richmond Cruising Club held a race to Islington Bay on Saturday afternoon for centreboard bonis. 'Die course win from starling-line oft (.ho Western Wlinrf direct to Islington Bay. A fresh north-easterly wind was blowing, which gave the boats a close haul to the mouth of the bay, and then a beat ui> to the finishing-line off the Quarry Wharf. From a fairly good start Phaola crossed the line first, ' closely followed by Rnnui, Mawhiti, Matariki, Drone and Avro. Then cumo Matarere, Marianne and Paroro. Mawhiti took the lead of! Prince's Wharf, and a little further down the harbour Matarere, which was sailing very fast, run into second place. Off Calliopo Dock the order whb Mawhiti, Matarere, Matariki, Drone, Paroro, Marianne, Avro, Ilanui, Phaola. The two M boats, Mawhiti and Matarere, had now drawn well clear of the other craft, while the new boat, Paroro had replaced Matariki and Drone. Matarere threw out a strong challenge to Mawhiti and off Devonport Wharf there was very little between the two boats. After passing the Sandspit beacon Matarere worked to windward of Mawhiti and just before cleuring North Head caught and passed her. Matarere continued her lead and had tho race well in hand until within 200 yards of tho finishing-line, when her jib carried away, which got her into difficulties close inshore. Meanwhile, Marianne. which had overhauled both Paroro and Mawhiti, went into tho lead and was first, to finish. Tho race started at J p.m. The finishing times were:—Marianne (scr), 4h 20m 17a; Matarere (scr), 4h 27m 555; Mawhiti (scr), 4h 28m 21s; Paroro (scr), 4h 29m 355; Avro (2m). 4h 3Gm -10s; Matariki (sm). 4b :19m 12s; Rnnui (3m). 4h film 7s; Drono (scr), 4h 52m !)s; Phaola (30m), 5h 2m. WAKATERE CANOE CLUB OPENING OF SEASON The Wakatere Canoe Club officially opened its season at Narrow Neck on Saturday afternoon, when a race was held for its new 14ft. one-design class. It was intended to hold two events, but owing to a fresh northeasterly wind blowing on to the beach, it was almost impossible to launch the boats, and the officials decided to wait until conditions improved. Shortly before four o'clock the wind cased and a race was held for a special prize presented by Mr. W. A. Wilkinson. The course was a short one of three rounds, starting and finishing off the centre of the beach between a mark and the shore. At the fall of the last flag Wainui was first away, closely followed by Whirlwind, Whakawlioro. Wanderer and Wairiki, with the others handy. On the beat to the beacon Wainui improved her position, rounding this mark well clear of yTairiki and Wahine. On the run to the next mark Wairiki was overhauled by Wahine. On the completion of the first round the order was Wainui, Wahine, Wairiki, Whirlwind. Waimarie. Wanderer, Weona, Whakawhero and Waiola. Well handled by N. Wing, Wainui continued her lead on the second and final rounds. Wairiki threw out a strong challenge to Wahine. but the latter was enabled to keep ahead of her rival. The race started at 3.45 p.m. The finishing times were:—Wainui. 4h 15m 295; Wahine, 4h 17m 10s; Wairiki, 4h 17m 255; Whirlwind. 4h 20m 15s; Waimarie. 4h 21m 30a; Wanderer, 4h 21m 30b; Weona, 4h 22m 30s. The result was;—Wainui. 1; Wahine, 2; Wairiki. 3. There were no capsizes, but three boats carried away their rudder pintles in the heavy seas. In handing over the prize the donor gave n short address on small-boat sailing, and was thanked bv tho president. Mr. J. Brooke. Mr. Wilkinson was starter and timekeeper. The Richardson Cup will be competed for on November 20 WHANGATIEI CLUB [from OUR OWN correspondent] WHANGAREI, Saturday The Whangarei Cruising Club commenced its season this afternoon when laces were held from the Town Wharf, Whangarei, to Onerahi and round the marked course at Onerahi. There was a good sailing breeze and the majority of boats, carried full sail. The results were as follows : 22-footers and Over.—Mr. A. Carmichael's Revel, 1; Mr. G. Baker's Hilda, 2. SOCCER CLUB WITHDRAWS QUESTION OF FINANCE (Received November fi, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 5 At a meeting of tho Bo'ness Club, a member of the Scottish Second Division Soccer league, tho directors found that it was impossible to raise tho sum of A'9o to enable the club to maintain its position as a member of tho Scottish league, and it was thereforo decided to withdraw. Its match today against Leith was cancelled. Tho club, however, will compete in the Scottish Cup. for which it is still eligiblo.
