'OPENING OF GRASS COURTS MUCH ENTHUSIASM DISPLAYED BUSY DAY FOR PRESIDENTS The majority of the grass court lawn tenliis clubs opened their courtß for play on Saturday in fine though \vin<ly weather.. The following clubs officially opened:—Auckland, Devonport, Eden and Epsom. Remuera-, Royal Oak. United. West End. The president of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, Mr. G. Gore, accompanied by Mr. R. B. Hardy, president of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, had a busy afternoon visiting Eden and Epsom at 2 p.m., Royal Oak nt 2.30 p.m., Auckland at 3 p.m., Kemuern. 3.30 p.m.. United at. 4 p.m., West End, at 4.30 p.m. and Mount Albert at 5 D.m. Dunns the course of his remarks to club members. Mr. Gore emphasised how pleased he was with the enthusiasm in tennis matters in Auckland, both from a club and an association point of view. He was more than gratified to renew old memories of Auckland clubs, having rlayed on many of the local courts more than 30 years ago. He was pleased that Aucklanders had had nn opportunity of witnessing tbo United States team and hoped the Teturn visit 'would meet with success. Mr. Gore was impressed with the appearance of the courts and expressed the view that if all associations showed such enthusiasm, everything would be well for tennis in New 'Zealand. Mr. Hardy thanked the clubs for their continued support and congratulated them on their ovident progress. He expressed pleasure nt Mr. Gore's visit and gave an outline of the activities for the coming •eason. AUCKLAND CLUB Mr. Hosking welcomed visitors and members to the Auckland Club and wished *ll a pleasant season. Mr. Hardy honed there would be an increase in membership during the season and thanked members for their co-operation with the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association. EDEN AND EPSOM / Past history of the Eden and Epsom Club was referred to by the president, Mr. A. C. Johns, at the opening on Saturday afternoon. He mentioned that the club was the oldest but one in Auckland, and was celebrating its 47th year. During that 47 years there had been only six presidents. Membership this year had been well maintained. and there were only a few vacaneies. Mr. G. Gore, president of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, mentioned that over 30 years ago he had played on the Eden and Epsom courts with H. A. Parker, a New Zealand champion. "But." said Mr. Gore, "you must not get the impression that I was ud to his standard." Mr. R. B. Hardy, president of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, and a member of the club, also spoke. Mr. A. S. C. Brown, who. for 11 years was president, two years secretary and one year treasurer, was appointed a life-member. In the evening a successful function, combining tennis and dancing, wa3 held at Clive Road. REMUERA CLUB "Five titles on grass courts and three titles on hard courts is the record for last season of the Remuera Club," said Mr. D. G. Macfarlane, the president, in opening the courts. Mr. Macfarlane said he believed that the courts never looked so well. Several improvements had been carried out since ■last year. Membership of the club was splendid, and there were vacancies for only Mr. Gore, president _of the New Zealand ' Lawn Tennis Association, and_ Mr. R. B. Hardy also made short complimentary remarks. / A progressive tournament was won by 1. E, Hickson and Miss Dodds. ROYAL OAK CLUB Mr. C. D. "Warren, president, welcomed visitors and friends at the Royal Oak /Club, and pointed out the improvements made to the ground and expressed satisfaction at the progress of the club. Mr. Gore and Mr. Hardy also spoke, delivering congratulatory messages from their associaMr. W. J. Jordan addressed the gathering and presented the Jordan Cup for competition. among clubs in the Onehunea district and won for the first time by Royal Oak.- Dr. Noakes received the cup on behalf of the club. _ ' , . Progressive tennis was held durinsr tna afternoon, the winners being Dr. Noakes and Miss Wade. UNITED CLUB Members and friends met with enthusiasm at the opening function of the "United Club. At thd afternoon tea gathering Mr. Gore and Mr. Hardy were intro- : xiuced by Mr. J. Allen. Mr. Gore said he was , 'most pleased to revisit courts on which he had played a groat number of years ago when they were public courts. The old association revived for him pleasant memories. Later in the evening the club held a successful dance at the Daxieland Cabaret. WEST END CLUB The voungest club of Auckland tennis. West End. opened with two .new courts to its credit Mr. G. L. Taylor, chairman of the Parks Committee of the Auckland - City Council, , explained that the courts had been laid bv the council and said that it was the only. enterprise of that nature •undertaken by the council for the year. The first two courts, had beep laid in February last. The enthusiasm of the club was great, and there had been many ann'l- - for membership. A sum of ioOO had been put on the estimates by the Citv Council this year to complete the courts. The two new courts had been put down on a slightly improved method—emulsified bitumen mixed with chips and sand. Ihe club paid the council £2O a year, so that there was no cost to the ratepayers. 1 " This club is only a baby—only nine months old," said Mr. S. deal. the president, "but the progress made has been a / credit to the members and to tho district. DEVONPORT CLUB The Devonport Lawn Tennis Club held *s opening on Saturday afternoon, the first ball was played by ; Dr. Pope and Mr. Harper. A progressive tournament was played, the winners being Maureen O Bricn and Mr. Beechey. Prizes for the hidden numbers were won by Miss Hagar and ur. Pope. The prizes were presented by Mrs. Pope.
