USE OF TOWN HALL

Sir, —I would like to state that my experience has been entirely the opposite to that of your correspondent, J. G. Hughes. Everybody with whom I have spoken on the subject has expressed thankfulness that the City Council has put a stop to such proceedings which have been witnessed in the Town Hall for so many Sunday evenings. The council by their action have upheld the Christian religion. We should all be proud of our young New Zealander, Mr. K. H. vin, for the way in which he has pointed out the harm such exhibitions do to the Christian faith. R. G. Hughes. Greenhithe, Nov. 5, 1932.

Sir, —I am opposed both to the theology and faith-healing practices of Mr. Dallimore, but at th(j same time uphold that canon of British justice, that no one, whatever the alleged offence, > shall be condemned unheard. All who agree with this will be perturbed to_ read that the Mayor contemplated closing the Town Hall to Mr. Dallimore, on his own authority, because he had had representations made to him "by very high officials indeed." Such back-door methods of using influence are highly obnoxious, even had the tenor of the "representations" been made public. The point in brief is this: If Mr. Dallimore has broken any law, then it is the duty of the police to proceed against him in a public he has. not so offended, it is certainly an objectionable practice to use "high" position as a means of securing the ear and services of our chief magistrate. The only just course is .to oppose him as Mr. Melvin has, with speech and pen, or, alternatively, by having legislation passed to make his practices illegal. A.E.C.
