GUY FAWKES' NIGHT
FIREWORKS AND BONFIRES NO CALLS FOR BRIGADES The annual Guy Fawkes celebration was observed extensively on Saturday evening, although the fireworks displays were perhaps not so spectacular as in former years. Large numbers of people ascended such vantage points as Mount Eden and One Tree Hill, and obtained excellent views of the demonstrations. Large bonfires, even at the more distant parts of the North Shore and in districts bordering the Manukan Harbour, could be discerned. The celebration was not a prolonged one, because of rain which began about nine o'clock and quickly gained intensity. In the city and suburbs fire brigades were iii readiness for any outbreaks of fire caused by the celebration. Apart from several small grass fires, no incident was reported.
HAMILTON CELEBRATION DISPLAY AT LAKESIDE [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Sunday There was an attendance of over 2000 people at the Guy Fawkes celebrations at the Hamilton Lake .Domain last evening. The weather was fine and mild, and there was a complete absence of wind. The domain grounds were brilliantly illuminated with arc lamps, and in the centre a platform was erected from which an excellent concert programme, including community singing, fancy dancing, gymnastics and choral items, was given. While the concert was ih progress a huge bonfire, which had been prepared on a raft near the lakeside, was set ablaze. This was followed by a great fireworks display, from a raft moored some distance from the lakeside. The proceeds from the evening will be devoted to the Waikato Children's Camp League and the Waikato Hospital Patients' Sunshine League.
