RESTRICTION ON BANANAS
Sir, —II is an ill wind indeed that blows nobody any good, but it would be interesting to know who stands to benefit by the quota imposed on tho importation of bananas. Not the consumers in New Zealand, who stand to pay an increased price; not the fruiterers, who v ill sell less at the enhanced price; certainly not tho planters as a whole, for who ever heard of a producer or grower who wished to have a quota placed as a restriction on his output ? But a few favoured growers might make enormous profits at the expense of the people of New Zealand and those planters not so favoured might be forced out of business. Surely the members of our Government are there to conserve the interests of New Zaland and not those of a few wealthy planters. Jhe quota could easily lie used to give a monopoly of banana supplies to a favoured few, which would be analagons to that granted to the Wheat Marketing Board. Banana.
