OVERHEARD BY CONSTABLE THE THEFT OF JEWELLERY TWO MEN FOUND GUILTY [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] PALMERSTON NORTH, Friday In the Supreme Court to-day Edwin George Valentine Roberts, aged 23, labourer, and Raymond Patrick Letton, aged 26, labourer, were found guilty of breaking and entering the premises of Lauchlan and Company, Limited, jewellers, Courtenay Place, about midnight on Sunday, June 26, and stealing jewellery to the value of £317 19s 6d. Letton, who had previous convictions was sentenced to three years' imprisonment and declared an habitual criminal. Roberts was sentenced to 18 months' reformative detention. Two boxes of jewellery were found in a yard near a lorry which had been abandoned when a nightwatchman disturbed the burglars. Accused were taken into custody at New Plymouth. The principal evidence at the trial was a conversation between the prisoners in the cells overheard by a constable.
