LENIENCY DISREGARDED

MAN VICTIMISES FRIENDS THREE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAMILTON, Friday A plea of guilty was entered by Edward Randall, aged 28, in the Hamilton Police Court to-day, to charges of stealing two bicycles, valued at £5 and £3, of obtaining £l3 by false pretences, and of stealing a man's lumber jacket, valued at £1 7s 6d. Evidence was given that accused had borrowed the bicycles at Kopaki and Rotorua, and had failed to return them. He made representations at Waimahi that he had a motor-car which required repairing, and on that representation he had obtained £l3. Detective-Sergeant Thompson said that Randall, who had assumed two other names, had imposed on those who had befriended him. He had been previously convicted of theft. The magistrate, Mr. Wyvern Wilson, said accused seemed to have received too much leniency. He had been before the Court three times, and all it had cost him was £2. He had disregarded the leniency given him. and had not compiled with the terms of his probation. Accused was dishonest and could not be trusted. He was a liar and a thief, and had taken down friends who had tiied to help him. Accused was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
