THE MOTUEKA SEAT
COALITION CANDIDATE MR. HOLYOAKE'S CAMPAIGN [BY TELKGRAm—OWN CORRESPONDENT] NELSON, Friday Hie official Coalition candidate for the Motueka seat, Mr. K. J. Holyoake, opened his campaign at Collir.gwood. Ho said thero was no doubt that the Coalition Government was one of> the greatest factors in the hastening of economic recovery. The Ottawa Conference marked the commencement of a new era of truer Empire trade and the first step toward establishing a groat economic commonwealth. Dealing with social services, Mr. Holyoako quoted figures showing that the yearly amounts spent on health, pension?, superannuation and education totalled £7,661,000, which revealed that Now Zealand was far bettor served per head of population than any other country in the world. It was absurd for the Labour Party to claim, or even ask for more. The country simply could not. stand it. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried. OPPONENT TO GOVERNMENT HON. R. McKENZIE'S VIEWS [by telegraph—own correspondent] NELSON, Friday The reasons why he opposed the present Government were given by the Hon. Roderick McKenzie, Independent-Liberal Labour candidate for the -Motueka seat. The Government proposed to interfere with the currency of the country and form a Federal State Bank. The country was already well served by commercial banks. He opposed the present treatment of public servants and would have supported a graduated cut on the salaries of higher-paid officials, but the ordinary servants could not afford a 15 per cent cut. The Ministers were great schemers and also great bunglers. There wero plenty of opportunities for opening up the country to provide work for every man and woman. The Government started on the wrong track with the unemployment question. Ho supported some of the Government public works proposals, but not many, and if elected, he would give members a piece of his mind and also somo directions to follow.
