VISITING CHESS PLAYER

GAMES AT ROTORUA TWENTY-SEVEN AT SAME TIME [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] ROTORUA, Saturday Playing 27 local chess players simultaneously, Mr, Maurice E. Goldstein, a recognised international chess champion, who has been on a visit to Rotorua, finished with 21 wins, four draws and two losses. His winning opponents were Messrs. A. Butt and H. Ilardcastle. Those equalising wero Messrs. L. E. Andrews, H. E. Cooncy (To Puke), E. Jackson and A. 11. Fraer. Mr. Goldstein handicapped himself by conceding the choice of colour to his opponents. He preceded his display with a lecturette on the principles of opening play and development. At the close of his performance Mr. Goldstein was thanked for his address and exhibition by Iho president of the Rotorua Chess Club. Mr. L. E. Andrews.

In replying, Mr. Goldstein said lie had been surprised at tho play of his opponents, which was of a high standard. The Rotorua club was known in Australia, lie said, tho editor of the Choss Review having described it as the "livest" chess club in New Zealand.
