POETRY AND MUSIC
A very interesting lecture was given by Miss Renee Satchwell to the Musical Circle of the League of Pemvomen last week. Tho subject of the lecture was " The Influence of Music" as poets have described
Commencing with early _ Greek mythology, various poets and their views on the subject were dealt with. Extracts were read from the works of Shakespeare, Milton, Dryden, Pope, Collins. Elizabeth Barnet Browning, O'Shaughnessy, Robert Browning and others, showing how poets, as time advanced, from regarding music as a magic art, began to realise its possibilities as a spiritual and moral power iu the world. The musical programme illustrated some of the moods induced by music.
Miss Laura Walker sang "Orpheus With His Lute".-, Miss Ida Walker contributed "The Arrow and the Song"; and two viola solos, "Benediclus" and "Folk Song" were played by Miss Amy Stevenson, Miss Mavis Hewson accompanying. The pianoforte items were a duet "Marche Militaire," played by Miss Blamires and Miss Hewson, a Rhapsody of Brahms, played bv Miss Hewson, and two illustrations from the works of Chopin by Miss Satchwell. '
