ISLAND OF MALTA

ABANDONMENT PREVENTED LORD STRICKLAND'S STATEMENT MALTA. Oct. 27 Condemning the Nelsonian school of thought in England which advocated tho abandonment of Malta and the blockading of the Mediterranean by means of bases at the entrances, Lord Strickland told the Senate that Lord Fisher's intervention had prevented the abandonment of the island. If the British had left Malta it would have been occupied by Franco under threat of war. The possibility of war in the near future was indicated by the flow of capital into the British banks and the masses of bullion in the Bank of Fiance.
