MAORI WOMAN DROWNED
FALL INTO RIVER HOLE BODY NOT RECOVERED [by telegraph—own cor re sfon DENT J RAWENE, Friday A fatality occurred near Omanaia., seven miles from Rawene, about four o'clock this afternoon, when a native woman, Mrs. Sarah Karauna, aged 58, of Omanaia, was drowned while crossing the Omanaia River. She had been gathering pipis with threa other native women, and was wading waist-deep in the river, which is tidal, on her way home, when she apparently stepped into a hole in the river bed. Mrs. Karauna could not swim and was not seen again. Constable L. Holt, of liawene, was communicated with, and immediately commenced dragging operations. The search was continued for three hours, but without success. Early to-morrow I 'morning, at low tide, further efforts will be made to recover the body.
