THE STRAWBERRY SEASON
PROSPECTS FAVOURABLE INCREASE IN SUPPLIES The supplies of strawberries forwarded to the City Markets are increasing daily and a, plentiful season is predicted. Although the quality of the fruit so far placed on the market has varied considerably, many exceptionally good lots have been offered. Iri the main the berries have come from gardens in the. Birkdale area, where the crops are more advanced than in other districts. At yesterday's sale at. the City Markets extra choice Captain Cook berries brought from 2s 6d to 2s 10jd a chip, compared with Is 9d to 2s 2d a chip at the sale on Tuesday. Inferior Captain Cook, which sold at from 2s to 2s 3d, were proportionately dearer. Marguerites again sold from 9d up. In a number of city shops good quality Captain Cook were yesterday priced as low as 2s a chip, the very best fruit being offered at from 2s 9d to 3s. The increase in the prices at the City Markets may be accounted for by the fact that at th© beginning of the week the market was fairly heavily supplied for this time of the year, the prices falling in consequence. Another factor is that recent, wet weather has hindered picking operations. However, the rain should have a beneficial effect, on the crops, and largo supplies arc expected to come to hand shortly.
