LIQUOR AFTER HOURS
PROSECUTION OF LICENSEE SEQUEL TO POLICE VISIT [from our own correspondent] PUKEKOIIE, Wednesday .As a result of a visit by police to the Patumahoe Hotel at about 10 p.m. on Saturday, October 8, charges of selling liquor after hours and keeping premises open for the sale of liquor after hours were brought against the licensee, Milton Archibald Peryer, in the Pukekohe Police Court yesterday. Evidence was given that Sergeant Cowan and Constable Sutherland visited the hotel at (he time mentioned. A number of men were in the bar and glasses of liquor were on the counter. Some of those present were listening to a wireless broadcast. Mr. K. G. Foster, for defendant, said that although the. charges could perhaps have been defended, the licensee had decided to plead guilty. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, said he would take that into consideration. Counsel said that Peryer had the men at the hotel as his guests to listen to a radio account of a wrestling match. lie had provided them with drinks early in the evening, but he admitted that they had also paid for drinks themselves. Mr. Hunt: He will need to be careful in future. He is a new licensee, and has not been convicted before, so I will fine him only half the usual amount. On tlie charge of selling liquor after hours, Peryer was fined £5. The other charge was withdrawn. Six men charged with being found on the premises without lawful excuse were each fined £l.
