BIRKENHEAD ECONOMY
PROPOSALS ADOPTED WATER SUPPLY MATTERS The Birkenhead Borough Council last evening adopted economies recommended by the Finance Committee, which, it was estimated, would result in a saving of £I4OO during the ensuing six months. The Mayor, Mr. G. Mills, presided. Tho economies included the laying-up of one of the motor-trucks and the curtailment of street lighting in respect of 100 lamps. After two hours' discussion on the advisability of the council undertaking the sanitation service, the cbntract was renewed for three years. The contractor will also serve the portion of Northcote Borough in which drainage is not installed. ©rchardists in Salisbury Road, Birkdale. wrote that there was not an adequate water supply at the time when the strawberry crops were being harvested. The waterworks engineer stated that there was a two-inch main in the road, with f-inch service pipes. He had heard of no shortage of water in the locality. No action is to be taken. The Birkenhead Fire Board wrote that in several streets the water mains were not of sufficient size for fire protection purposes. In 18 streets, affecting 126 houses, the mains were only 2-inch and 1-inch diameter. The matter was referred to the Works Committee, which is to submit estimates of the cost of larger mains. Mr. R. R. Ilayman reported that a request to the Auckland Harbour Board that the traffic bridge on the western viaduct, which is now open from 7.15 a.m. till 6 p.m., should be available for traffic for a longer period, had been unsuccessful. The Young Men's Christian Association was granted permission to take up a street collection in the borough on November 4.
