SCHOOL HALL GALLERY

NO DANGER OF COLLAPSE MOUNT ALBERT GRAMMAR Thern is no dancer of the CQllapse of tho gallery of the assembly hall at Mount Albert Grammar School, as long as the gallery is not used, according to a letter received from the Public Works Department by the Auckland Grammar School Board at its meeting yesterday. "It will not collapso under its own weight in normal circumstances, it would need a seismic disturbance of an intensity sufficient to cause the collapse of the main walls of the building," the letter stated. "In other words, it is as safe as the vest of tho building," remarked the chairman, Professor A. P. W. Thomas. The trouble had arisen from a report made by a Government official who conducted an inspection for earthquake risk. The headmaster of the school, Mr. F. W. Gamble, had stated the gallery was not satisfactory owing to restricted visibility due to the distance from the platform and that no inconvenience would bn occasioned if its use were discontinued. Tho chairman said the gallery was cortainly of uso on prize-giving day. If the gallery waft required, it should be strengthened. It was decided to obtain the headmaster's opinion on the matter.
