Injury to pupils at the Waverley public school, which was struck by lightning, was prevented by the forethought of teachers. As soon as the storm began, the teachers ordered the children into the class rooms. Shortly afterwards a vivid flash of lightning struck the gable of the boys' section. Pieces of slate were flung about the deserted playground, and some pieces were found • 100 yards from the school. The deafening report alarmed the children, but their fears were calmed by the masters. Hie woodwork .of the roof was damaged as well as the slates.
