WELLINGTON MEETING

PAHU'S GOOD PROSPECTS FINE GALLOP BY MIDI AN TOUT LE MOND IMPROVED CbV TSI.KGRAI'II-—OWN CORHESrONDK.NT] WELL! XC.TOX, Thursdn y Gay Crest did no) put up a very attrac--1 ive performance 011 the track this morning. Paint had liim in trouble most of tlie way and over tlio concluding stageß of their nine furlongs' (oak ran right away from him. Hay Crest foitntl difficulty in handling the plough track, which was on the heavy side. He also went out fairly wide, hut, even making allowances, it was not the effort of a horse with good prospects in n rneo in which he has to carry 9.10 and give his track opponent, Pahu, 3Glb. It nmy not bo wiso to rely entirely on this showing in summing up Gay Crest's prospects, for he ran well lit Ashburton last month, but his record makes it clear that ho is not at his best, until later in the season. B. H. Morris will rido him on Saturday. Pahu is vory lit. After his gallop he pulled up in good order, iu contrast to Gay Crest, who had obviously had enough. His prospects would be enhanced if rain fell, but oven ns it is, he will bo ono of tho dangerous light-weights in tho Wellington Handicap. .T. M. Sampson's pair of two-year-olds. Guarantee and Southdown, nttractod attention. Both theso youngsters nro winners and they look very forward. They galloped half a mile attractively. Guarantee looks a particularly solid sort. Southdown is lighter in build and looks likely to improvo with ago and make a good three-year-old. Tout Lo Mond galloped in pleasing style over six furlongs, lie was a winner on his lust visit, to Trentham. ]lo is said to 'hiivo J'uu a tfood race on tho firpfc day at Dunedin, followed by a disappointing effort in tho Guineas. To-day's gallop points to bis having improved ns a result of IheßO races. Cricket Bat has dune good work at Riccarton. Ho ran a solid race into fourth place in tho Timoru Cup, but ho still gives tho impression that a few more rousing gallops will do him good. Since he was last here ho has thickened out and is now a very solidlooking horso. Fast 'Passage has not had a race since tho Grand Kational meeting last August, but she looks fit and well and capable of putting up a good raco in. tho Wellington Handicap. Tho three-year-old Drumfire is an attrac-tive-looking colt. Ho has not raced Binco Easter. , _ According to those who saw Tea Trader at Avondale the two races he had there have worked a big improvement in his condition. Tea Trader will probably be ridden in tho Shorts Handicap by C. Walters, the stable apprentice. K. Voitro will bo required for Equitant. Rational 11., who claims two engagements on tho opening day, tho Wainui Handicap and the Shorts Handicap, will be a starter in the mile event, in which B. H. Brodie has been engaged. Historic has resumed strong work on the Trentham tracks. It is only natural that, with his racing in Sydney, he would be forward and muscular, but he has never looked better or brighter than he does at present. Autopay is doing daily tasks in dashing style. He is in hard, bright condition, but will not resume racing before tho Stewards' Handicap at Kiccarton. Purso has greatly benefited with her racing and travelling. Senior, the two-year-old member of T. H. Lowry's team, brought to Trentham by R. Alexander, shaped attractively in his sprint effort this morning, Senior is a half-brother by Chief Ruler to Gnscony, who was firstclass at two years. Ho has lfot had a race and will thus be at a disadvantage with several other youngsters in the Wellesley Stakes, but he is a good mover, with smooth action, who ought to win plenty of races. The most attractive two-year-old effort at Trentham to-day was that of Midian. The Wangnnui winner looks wonderfully improved.. He could have registered brilliant time this morning,, but. was restrained. He will make Princess Doreen gallop to beat him. • Nothing here is working better than Normandy, jffe ran the Inst half of his gallop this morning .in 4Ss. with his rider hanging on hard. It looks ns if only bad luck can keep him out of money it the mooting. THE FINAL GALLOPS NORMANDY'S SMART EFFORT GAY CREST NOT IMPRESSIVE [by TELEGRAPH—PRESS association] WELLINGTON. Thursday Although it was nominally tho final galloping morning at Trentham, there was not the amount of fast work done that might have been anticipated. Tho outsido of tho course proper and the plough were both open, the former being fast, but tho latter, which had not been in use for over a week, was slower by about three seconds to the half-mile. The latter was slightly in front at the end. J ho Quoin did hulf a mile in 535. Palm was always going hotter then Oay Crest over nine furlongs, and in the straight he drew away to beat his companion by six or ei"ht lengths. Pnhu's time for the last mile was 1.48 3-5, tho final .half taking 555. Gay Crest was all at, pea in the soft going. Two bunches of two-year-olds came down the straight from tho half-mile. Epigram, Vidian, Silvox and "VVidden comprised the first lot. The first three were always in front., and they finished together. Iheir tjmo was 48 4-ss. Quietly, Secrecy and Senior were the other lot. Senior showed a lot of pace early, but was steadied near the end, and the other pair beat him home. Their time was 50s. Other visiting horses did pacing only. They included Boynl Artist. Star Artist. Tea Trader, Chrysology, Aesculus, l' ast Passage, Cricket Bat and Drumfire. Arrowzone, with A. Jenkins in the saddle, jumped thrco schooling hurdles proficiently.
