INCIDENT IN PARK
MAORI WOMEN AND LIQUOR CHARGE OF SUPPLYING FAILS [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] OPOTIKI, Wednesday A charge of supplying two native women with liquor on September 10 was brought by the police against F. C. Parkinson in the Opotiki Court to-day before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M. Constable Breed gave evidence that he saw two women with accused on a camping ground. One woman was having a drink from a bottle, which she tried to hide. Accused denied having supplied the women with liquor. Sergeant Millar said that he yas with Constable Breed at the time and ho corroborated the constable's evidence. Ho also said that both women had been convicted of drunkenness. He had subpoenaed both women for to-day, but they had failed to appear. Accused, giving evidence, stated that on the day in question one of the women met him in the street and asked him to meet her in the park to discuss the question of the adoption of a child. When ho arrived the women had a bottle of whisky, but he did not drink any. The magistrate said the only evidence was that Parkinson was in company with Maori women who were drinking liquor, but this fact was not sufficient, for a conviction. He dismissed the information.
