TROTTING AT EPSOM
SATURDAY'S CHIEF EVENTS REVIEW OF RECENT FORM ARABOND'S JELLICOE CHANCE BY ABAYDOS The prcsenco in the field of the Hawera pacer Arabontl and the Canterbury representative Pageant will lend additional interest to tho Jellicoe Handicap, the principal race at Epsom next Saturday, when the Auckland Trotting Club's Spring Meeting opens. Some good horses belonging to the Auckland Province are also engaged and, while the field is not iaige, it is likely that fancies will take a wide range. After his failure in the Mark Memorial Handicap at Claudelands Carnui has lost caste, but if ho were to reproduce tho form, lie displayed last Christmas he would bo very dangerous. As it is. Arabond, who is also, on the limit, 4.35. will be preferred, and he has splendid credentials for a race of this description. Last season he won three times at two miles arid was .a little unlucky in not winning the Cambridge Cup. being narrowly defeated by Princo Pedro, after getting a bad run at tho home turn. Arabond is n genuine stayer and should receivo every assistance from J. B. Pringlo, ( whose judicious handling of El Merit and Wmstiow' at Hamilton was an important factor in their success. On reexmt form Dan Direct, 4.34, does not appear to bo very dangerous, although if ho strikes really good track conditions he may effect a surprise. On the samo line is tho free-legged pacer Direct Morning, the hero of the recent Hamilton meeting. He is ill excellent order and is probably capable of going faster than tho 4.32 he registered m winning the Mark Memorial Handicap. Anon. 4.33, has good claims for consideration, and us tho result of recent racing should be close to her best form again. In the South Island she won some useful two miles races in smart time, and she haß performed fairly consistently since coming North to S. M. August's stable. First Flight, Kewpie's Triumph and Pageant are a smart trio on 4.32. First Flight did not look ready at Hamilton and if she has made reasonable progress she must bo respected. When thoroughly tuned up she is a brilliant pacer and a great stayer. Kewpie's Triumph was not nearly at his best when lie contested the August Handicap, but lio is now bearing a very bright and healthy condition and on Saturday, in running 3.20 for a mile and a-half, showed that he is recovering his good f? l ™ again. A repetition of his high-class displays of last season would place him well in tho picture. Pageant is an old campaigner,. and is no stranger to Auckland. At the winter meeting at Epsom in 1928. when in W. J. lomkinson's charge, he won a double on tho first clay and was runner-up to Tauiaro in the Adams Memorial Cup on the second day. Two years ago lie camo Inorth with Harold Logan and remained at Epsom for two montliH. Pageant raced at Addington in August and showed a glimpse of form by finishing third to Gold Country and Golden Pedro over a mile and a-Quarter in 2.40. Ihe fact t hat ho has been left in both tho Jellicoe and Electric Handicaps indicates that ho is pleasing his trainer in his work, i Tho back-marker. Peter Pirate, 4.28. appears to liavo a big contract, but his form since being under E. N. Kemierley's care has been so good that he cannot be left out' of calculations. In heavy going at tho Juno mooting he won three times in four starts. In August ho finished second to Prince Pedro from 84yds. behind, to run 4.29 3-5. His latest effort, at Hamilton, when he finished third in tho Mark Memorial Handicap from 108 yds., was a remarkably good effort, as ho established a track record of 4.26 4-5. Tho raco is full of possibilities, but those at present most discussed are Arabond. Direct Morning, Kewpie's Triumph and Peter Pirate. There is a good field in the Electric Handicap, a 2.48 class mile and a-auarter event. Among the acceptors ure Dan Direct, Pageant. Kewpie's Triumph and First Flight, who are engaged in tho Jellicoe Handicap earlier in the programme, and their form in that raco should give a good line on their chances here. Of the limit trio. Little Guy. Brontlight and Brent Zolock. most attention will be paid to Littlo Guy, who won the Massey Memorial Handicap in August in hollow style. Little Guy ha 3 been a big disappointment for over two years, but since joining F. ,T. Smith's stable he appears to have made splendid progress. lie is very fit and should lio hard to dispose of on Saturday. Brentlight is consistent and is 6tiro to race solidly, but Brent Zolock, a very smart pacer, has not displayed much form lately, having developed bad manners at tho barrier. Anon. To Wahia. Trustworthy and Real Girl are on 2.47, and on recent form tho lastnamed has the best credentials. In August sho finished third to Littlo Guy find Direct Morning and at Hamilton ran second to Direct Morning. Kewpie's Guy reads better than Dan Direct, on 2.40. and, as she races well when fresh, she should bo prominent. Kewpie's Triumph and Pageant are on the same line and should run well, while at a point further back thore is First Flight. Mountain Dell. 2.44, is sprinting brilliantly and should keen those in front of her busy. There is ample material for a fine race and the fancied division may include Little Guy. Real Girl. Kewpie's Triumph and Kewoie s Guy. SOUTHERN TROTTING THE ADDINGTON CARNIVAL HANDICAPS FOR FIRST DAY [liY TELEGRAPH—PRKSS ASSOCIATION] CHPISTCHURCH.
