CAPSIZE OF MOTORS

OCCUPANTS' LUCKY ESCAPE NONE SERIOUSLY INJURED REMARKABLE LORRY ACCIDENT Remarkable escapes from serious injury were experienced by the occupants of two motor vehicles which turned completely over in spectacular accidents during tho week-end. In one case tho vehiclo was little damaged, but in tho other it was almost wrecked. In tho first accident, which occurred at 12.40 a.m. yesterday at the Point Chevalier Hall corner on tho Great North Road, a taxi-driver, Mr. John Metcalf Senior, aged 25, of 6 Fisherton Street, Grey Lynn, received concussion and abrasions to tho hands. His car, which was not carrying any passengers at the time, struck a van which was parked at the side of the road and skidded violently, overturning twico and carrying away two verandah posts. It finished up on its wheels, but .with the body-work badly smashed. Practically all the glass in tho car was broken, tho upper part of the body was crushed and tho fenders were buckled. Mr. Senior was thrown into the rear of tho car and ho was found in an unconscious condition. Later be was taken by the St. John Ambulance to the Auckland Hospital. His condition last evening was not serious. Tho only damage to the van was tho buckling of one of the rear mudguards. An oven moro fortunato escape was experienced by tho two occupants of tho driver's cab of a heavy lorry, which cap. I sized on tho Hauraki Plains while on thp way from Whakatane to Auckland yesterday morning. Tho driver escaped without any injury, while tho second occupant, Mr. Frederick Wells, aged 20, also a truck-driver, of Maraetai, received lacerations to tho legs. Ho was taken by service car to tho Auckland Hospital, being admitted about. 1 p.m. yesterday. His condition last evening was not serious. Tho lorry, which was engaged in a regular service from Whakatane, skidded in loose metal and turned completely over, landing on its wheels again with the engine still running. The driver, holding the steering wheel, was actually able to retain his seat. No damage was done to tho chassis, only the cab structure showing tho effects of tho mishap.
