RICH ORE DISCOVERED

AREA NEAR COROMANDEL YIELD SENT TO BANK SOME SPECIMEN STONES FIND MADE BY PROSPECTORS [nY TF.LEirtArfr —own correspondent] THAMES, Friday A quantity of rich gold-bearing ore, ajjout. 201b. in weight, was deposited in the Bank of New Zealand at Coromandel this morning by Mr. S. Chapman, junr., of Coromandel. It was obtained from a leafier on which Mr. Chapman. and his father, Mr. 8. Chapman, senr., have been working for about a week. Mr. Chapman has taken out, miner's rights and lias pegged out a claim of 15 acres near Coromandel township, and already about half a dozen more claims have been staked in the vicinity. The manager of the Coromandel branch of the Bank of New Zealand, Mr. P. Beveredge, said the ore was deposited with him this morning and appeared to be very rich in gold. The ore filled about three-quarters of a. sugar bag and, in addition, there was a pickle bottle filled with rich specimens of quartz. The total weight of the ore deposited in the bank was about 400oz. troy, which is equal to nearly 201b. The find has not been assayed, Mr. Beveredge continued, and he was not prepared to give any estimate of the value, although the ore was undoubtedly rich. i Mr. Chapman's claim is now centred round the leader from which the ore was taken. It is about 2£ miles from Coromandel, on the Tiki Range, near the Mercury Bay Road, It is at the rear of Mr. Gerald Mannion's farm, near some old claims, and situated roughly between the Pukewhai mine and the site of the old battery. Sir. Chapman and his father have been prospect ins in the Coromandel district for some years, Mr. Chapman, senr., was born in Coromandel about 70 years ago and has had a lifetime of experience on the goldfields. The leader'was discovered about, a week ago by Mr. Chapman, junior, and has not, been fully explored,.the drive having penetrated only for about 10ft-. Keen interest has been taken in the discovery in Coromandel and during the week at least, five claims have been pegged out in the vicinity.
