FIFTY YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald October 16, 1882: Our London letter states that some representatives of the* dark races, Wiremu Reweti Te Puhi Hiki, Hirini Rawini Te Taiwhanga, and Hokena Te Parore, the three Ngapuhi chiefs who had come Home to present the grievances of the Maori race at the foot of the throne, leave by the Orient liner Austral on their return to New Zealand. Though they have not been wholly successful in the ostensible objects of their mission, they have been very kindly received in high quarters, and have been well received by influential persons either directly connected with New Zealand, or feeling a warm interest in aboriginal races. They have not had the honour of a personal interview with Her Majesty, which, I believe, was the darling object of their visit, but their advent has been the occasion of eliciting no inconsiderable interest in questions affecting the Maori race, which may possibly shape itself in practical results. Lord Northbrook, First Lord of the Admiralty, addressed a crowded meeting at Liverpool last night. In the course of his speech he stated, in referring to the state of affairs in Ireland." that a decided turn for • the better had recently been manifested in that country, and the Irish were now evincing a desire to support the law. The following x telegram was received from New yesterday:—"Considerable anxiety is felt for the safety of the steamer Lalla Rookh, which lef- Otiehunga for Waitara on Wednesday last. She had several passengers, but having a good boat on board, it is not thought that anv lives would be lost if she has met with an accident."
