FIRST BIBLE IN ENGLISH
TYNDALE'S VERSION It is announced in the July number of the Nightingale Fellowship Journal, published iby St. Thomas' Hospital, London, that the hospital at one time had its own printing press, and that on this, in 1537, the first Bible in English was printed. This was Tyndale's version, which was very largely drawn upon by those who, in 1611, produced the Authorised Version. The Journal gives the wording of the Tyndalo title-page:— THE BYBLE. that is the holyo Scrypture of the Olde and Newe Testamente faythfully translated in Englysh. and newly « oversene and corrected. M.V.XXXVIT. S. PAUL. 11. TESSA. 111. UPraye for /us. that the worde of God may have fre passage and be gloryfyed. S. PAUL. COLOSS. 111. *!Let the worde of Christ dwel in you plenteouslye in a] wysedome. JOSHUE. I. fLet not the Boke of thys lawe doparte out of thy mouth, -but exeicyse thyselfe therin daye and nyghte, that thou mayest kepe and do every thynge according to it that is wrytten therein.
