FORTY YEARS' SERVICE

MR. JOHN THOMSON RETIRES NATIVE DEPARTMENT OFFICIAL One of the most prominent figures in connection with land settlement in the North Island during the last few years, Mr. John Thomson, recently retired on superannuation after more than 40 years' service as a* Government official. Mr. Thomson joined the Lands Department as a cadet and in 1905 he was transferred to Napier as chief clerk and secretary to the Hawke's Bay Land Board. In February, 1919, he was attached to the Native Department as native land purchase officer, with headquarters in Wellington, and during the last three years he has also acted as consolidation officer for the Kaipara consolidation and development schemes. For many years Mr. Thomson took an active part in aquatic sport. At one time he was captain of the St. George's Rowing Club, Auckland., which he represented as stroke in regatta races from 1893 to 1903. He won many races for his club. Later, from 1907 to 1909, he was captain of the Napier Rowing Club. He was also a successful amateur cyclist. Mr. Thomson proposes to take up farming in the King Country.
