FAMOUS WAR RELIC

EMDEN BELL MISSING The bell of the famous German cruiser Emden, which was destroyed by the Australian warship Sydney on November 9, 1914, and which has long been regarded as the most important relic in the collection of the Garden Island Naval Depot, is missing. It has disappeared from the doorway of the main building .on the island, and a search has failed to revoal its whereabouts.

The authorities have not yet lost hope that it has merely been "borrowed"—it was bolted to a specially -built mounting—and hesitate to ascribe its disappearance to theft. Apart from its inscription, it is easily identified, as it bears the marks of a hit by a shell from H.M.A.S, Sydney.
