UNEMPLOYMENT SCHEMES
Sir, —It has been common knowledge out this way since the work at the Stone Jug started that the purpose w&s a golf ' course. The next move should he that the zoo area bo extended to include three white elephants, the stadium, tennis court and the golf course. What many would like to know is, why some of this unemployed labour has not been put on to construct a road across the reef connecting Point Chevalier with the city and, incidentally, saving the Transport Board some thousands per annum, seeing that it would shorten the journey to Gaunt Street depot by at least half. Is it not nearly time that the unemployed were put to work at something of a useful nature? No wonder we are in the soup. James McPherson. Point Chevalier. Sir, —Forty thousand pounds being spent in levelling that rocky land by the Western Springs. What aro wo getting at? How long are the over-taxed people of New Zealand going to st,and this ? Eoads and bridges and land development is what we need, so as to have assets for our money. Why do we put up with this folly that is going on ? There are thousands of acres lying everywhere in the North that only require men with about £SOO. If these men were well directed we would have assets for our money and produce arriving in England in 14 months' time. I broke in 500 acres and did well on it under the old homestead system, and I have also broken in 736 acres under the old 40-acre system and made them pay. I was 30 years doing this in north Kaipara, so I know something about what I advocate. George L. Thomson. Muir Road, Mangere.
