SETTLING IDLE LANDS
PROPOSALS AT TAURANGA SEVERAL BLOCKS SUGGESTED [from our own correspondent] TAURANGA. Monday A decision to renew representations to the Lands Department and the Unemployment Board to make the Waipapa and Wainui blocks available immediately for settlement by unemployed men in the district was made at a meeting of the Tauranga Land Settlement League on Saturday. The Minister of Native Affairs is to be asked to co-operate in settling the Ongaonga and other suitable native blocks at present lying idle in the Tauranga district. Another motion was carried requesting the Minister of Public Works to expedite the roading of the Whatakau block, and that Wright's Road be connected with Esdaile's Road. It was stated that these three roads would open up large areas in the Katikati Riding. A committee was appointed to inspect the Omanawa block and another extensive block westward of the Wairoa River with a view to furnishing a report to the league as to their suitability for settlement.
