TELEPHONE TRUNK CALLS

SECURING RIGHT PERSON DISCUSSION WITH DEPARTMENT The possibility of arranging for long distance telephone calls so that no charge would be incurred if contact were not established with the person desired was discussed bv tho council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, yesterday. Tho matter arose from a request by a member that the matter should bo taken up with tho Post and Telegraph Department. The chief postmaster at, Auckland, Mr. S. M. Harrison, said that if a longdistance call were put through at present and tho number proved to be engaged, the subscriber was charged only one-third of tho toll call. In tho United States and other countries there was a system of "person to person" calls, by which tho subscriber asked not only for a certain number, but for the person to whom ho wished to speak. This represented an extra service, with an extra rato for the call, only a third being payable if the person desired wero not obtained.

It was decided to refer tho matter to the Associated Chambers of Commerce for discussion with the Post and Telegraph Department.
