HOUSES AT RICCARTON

CRICKET BAT'S FAST MILE PROSPECTS OF DON JOSE GOOD GALLOP BY SHATTER [BV TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCITURCH, Thursday Dry conditions again prevailed at Riccarton to-day, and fast times were recorded throughout the .morning's work. Tho inside of the trial grass was in general use, but there were a few gallops oil No. 7 grass, which is short of tho distance indicated by the poßtfi used' for it. Elude opened proceedings on the trial grass by striding over a mile in 1.45 3-5. Ho was not asked to show his best. Muff and Riri had an interesting tussle over a mile, run in 1.42 3-5, tho last half in 525. Muff had a head advantage at the ■finish. Gay Crest was not extended at any part of a seven furlongs task, taking 1.33. lout le Mond appeared to be going better than Adelplii at the end of six furlongs run in 1.17, the last half in 51s. Taunton strode over eoven furlongs in 1.31 2-5, and Lancer and Hounslow executed aimliar work in 1.32. Niggerhead and Silver Sight reeled oft half a mile in 495. The former is a doubtful visitor to Asliburton owing to the hard going. Lady Zephyr and Tea Garden ran five furlongs in 1.2. The former is a little backward in racing condition, and will bo all the better for a couple of races. Juniper easily accounted for Locksley over a mile, covered in 1.42 2-5, tho first half taking 495. Juniper will have to be seriously considered for Saturday's engagement. Don Jose galloped six furlongs comfortably in 1.17 3-5, the last half-mile in 51s. Uo will be ridden by A. Kastwood on Saturday, anil must be given a good chance. Minerval, assisted by Lord Masham over the last half-mile, covered six furlongs in 1.16, the last, half in 50 3-ss. lied Royal and Royal Sceptre sprinted haTt a mile along tho back stretch in 4t)s. Silver Scorn ran fivo furlongs comfortably in 3.3 4-5, Meprisant accompanying her over the last half. Ranelagh and Arrowmaid Metal Bird easily accounted for Robin Hood in a five-furlongs task, run in 1.l 2-5. Rational 11. and Takutama again sprinted three furlongs down the straight. The work given the former of late would suggest that he will contest the six furlongs raco on Saturday.

Ranelagh. joined by Hurlingham near the five-furlongs post, ehowed his usual track brilliance in recording 1.27 1-5 for seven furlongs, the last three in 375. Grampian and Helen Gold, ran half a mile in 50 2-ss, finishing together. The latter will have her first race on Saturday, and will carry tho colours of Mrs. M. O'Brien. High Tor recorded 1.3 2 5 for five furlongs. Arrowmaid ehowed a. return to form by holding Hunting Call safe over the final stages of, a half-mile gallop, taking 48s. On No. 7 track Winsome Hind ran seven furlongs in 1.29 3-5 without being seriously ridden out. Rocket and Fleeting Glance covered 6ix furlongs in 1.15 3-5, the last three in 38 l-ss. The former was doing good work over the concluding stages. Shatter arid Belvoir practically from a stand galloped six furlongs in 1.11 2-5, the last five in 61s. Shatter conceded a good deal of weight, and was going as well as his mate at the finish. The sensational gallop of the morning was credited to Cricket Bat, who, carrying about 7.0, covered a mile in the exceptionally fast time of 1.38 4-5. He ran the first half in 48 2-ss, and was then joined by Fast Passage, the pair finishing on terms. Allowance has to be made for this track, but in comparison with other work on it of late Cricket Bat's effort was outstanding. Night Flyer und Ramo were allowed ttf run half a mile in 52 l-ss. Solwit was given three-quarter pace work. Night Recital was again let off with a three-furlongs sprint, finishing well clear of Argentic (by Silverado —Spotlight) in 36 3-ss. Berate has been an absentee from the tracks for the'past few days owing to suffering from cracked heels, which will probably necessitate another spell for her. Gay Sonnet has made a reappearance at Riccarton, and is being ridden round the roads in the meantime by E. Shaw. Gay Sonnet should be capable of getting back on to the winning list. Shaw has recovered from the accident which kept him aside."for a long, period, but does, not intend to resume riding for some time yet.
