TAKANINI JUVENILES

" FULL DRESS REHEARSAL" INTERESTING TRAINING TEST PAPER MONEY COLT'S SPEED Something in the nature of a full dress rehearsal was staged at Takanini yesterday; when nine two-year-olds and four older horses with colours up were sprinted three furlongs from the barrier. Those taking part were Alignment (Mclnally), Paper Money— Vicereine colt (Gray), Gold Pocket, (Taylor), Expectancy (Gilmer). Weathervane— Sennight colt (Clifford), Star Artist (Walters), Gay Shield—Lady Mnrie filly ("Edwards), Lorrelle (Fearn), Muego (Crowley), Bell Topper (McFarlane), Miss Rewa (Grice). Exaggeration (Jones), and Gay Shield—Phaola filly (Bagby). The Paper Money—Vicereine colt and Exaggeration were quickest to begin. Exaggeration leading td the threo furlongs in 30 2-5 a and going on to complete five furlongs without being timed. The Paper Money colt was eased after going two furlongs, at which stage he was in front, and those nearest to Exaggeration after three furlongs wore tho Gay Shield—Lady Mario filly. Musgo. Star Artist, and Alignment. However, all were not ridden out and some wero rather 6low to get going.

The Paper Money—Vicereine colt again showed himself to bo a fast beginner and he looks a likely Avondale Stakes candidate. The Gay Shield—Lady Marie filly and the Gay Shield—Phaola • filly also showed speed, but as ull were not ridden equdlly hard it was not altogether a true test, beyond the fact that the Paper Money colt showed superior speed from the tapes. The gallop was timed not .from the barrier, but from tho disc about GOyds. beyond, bo that tho time recorded was from a moving start.

GREEK GOLD IMPRESSES A FIVE FURLONGS TRIAL Apart from the juvenile parade a fair amount of interesting work was performed on the middle grass at Takauini yesterImperial Prince (Jones? and Holly Lu (Gilmer) were given a rousing gallop over five furlongs, which they ran in 1.4. The first two .furlongs wero covered in 24 4-5s and both horses finished strongly with little between them at the close. Greek Gold (Taylor) comfortably defeated Arch Ruler (Forsyth) and Prolyxo (Moore) over five furlongs in 1.4 1-5, alter running the first two furlongs in 24 3-ss. Greek Gold, who worked very pleasingly, had something ,in reserve. Prolyxo showed speed in the early stageß, but was tiring at the end and Arch Ruler headed her near the post. It was a satisfactory gallop for all three, with Greek Gold's effort rathor impressive. Speedmint (Edwards) hit out nicely while running the last two furlongs of her work in 275. She is progressing well and looks better than ever. Miss Rewa (Crowley) was ridden, along to run two furlongs in 2Gs. She has not been up very long and can bo improved in condition. High Comedy (Edwards) and Royal Artist (Walters) ran five furlongs easily in 1.11. and Tea Trader waa not required to do better than half-pace. Pope's trio are all bright and healthy to undertake the new season's racing. Palace (Craig) was not extended while striding over six furlongs in 1.2 G. Ho is working in very free style and promises to be well forward for spring racing.

INFLATION'S CONDITION

CONFLICTING CABLEGRAMS MESSAGE FROM THE TRAINER [from our own correspondent] SYDNEY, SeDt.' 1 New Zealand horses so far have had their share of foot and leg trouble at Randwick. In spite of all talk to the contrary, Ammon Ra gave J. T. Jamieson some worry for a day or two. Silver Ring was another to cause anxiety, and now_lnflation is in the wars.. In addition to greaßy heels one of his forefeet has burst and A. McDonald has a task in front of him to fit him for tho Epsom Handicap. Inflation has done no work this week and at present he is under the veterinary surgeon. The greasy heels are difficult enoueh in themselves to treat so long as a horse is in training but now there is ail additional complication. McDonald has his . share of worry at his first venture as a. trainer in S.vdnev. Inflation looked like making a name for himself here, so that it is really bad luck.

A cablegram from Sydney during the weekend stated that Inflation, was in a bad way. This is in direct conflict with a private cablegram from McDonald received in .1 almerston North on Saturday morning. "1 his said that Inflation was "much improved.

BRONZE HAWK'S VICTORY COCAINE FOR EYE INJURY [from our own correspondent] SYDNEY, Sent. 1 As he is a geldins. Bronze Hawk, who defeated Kuv«<ra, the champion two-year-old of last season, in the Hobartville Stakes last Saturday, is not a Derby candidate. His seasoned condition no doubt won the race for him. but it was a courageous performance Going to the course ho injured an eyo in lbc n'otor float. With the stewards' consent, cocaine was injected to . deaden the pain. He finished from the middle of the field to beat Kuvera. who really bad done the spadework in wearing down the nacemaker. the speedy N.E.F. SLOT BETTING MACHINES EXPERIMENT A SUCCESS [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] L/ONDON, Aug. 5 A new development in totalisator belting has been tried at the Birmingham races. Automatic slot machines, electrically con nected with the main totalisator building, were placed at various points on the grounds. The machines are 110 larger than an automatic machine on a railway Btation They are simple to work and if errors are made it is because the investor makes -the mistake. A plate is twisted until the desired number is opposite a red arrow, then a 2s piece is inserted in the slot, and the ticket comes forth * Argument, which wastes so much time at the totalizator windows, is eliminated. With such machines placed among the general crowd at Epsom, Ascot. Doncaster and other places -where there is so often trouble with bookmakers, the totalisator should benefit considerably. All that would be needed would l:e a small building to pay out. winning bets_ and that could bo almost anywhere within reason —winners do not mind a short walk to draw their winnings. The machines at Birmingham were placed on the rails and were electrically connected with the main totalisator building. The experiments were a great success.
