FIFTY YEARS AGO
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of September 7» 1882: . Not a single voter turned up to poll in the Coleridge Licensing district, Canterbury, on the local option question. The returning officer, however, was equal to the occasion, and gave his vote against any increase of licences. The East district, where only one man voted, is now cast in the shade. A prospectus is out for a new insurance company, having its head office in Dunedin, to be called the Equitable Insurance Association of New Zealand. It will eventually include life, business and fireThe business will be confined to the colony. It will also include the issue of bonus, as well as ordinary policies, the bonus being divided, after 10 per cent has been paid to the shareholders. The natives between Poverty Bay and East Cape are suffering much for want of food. The chief article of diet, kumaras, owing to bad storage and constant rain, has perished. Ven* f«sw potatoes are grown on the coast,*fish, kumaras and pork being the principal articles of consumption. The storekeepers beyond Tolaga are unable to keep a sufficient stock of flour, the natives having had to resort to this article. One storekeeper took over the counter in two weeks more than £350 for provisions only. There is no lack of money, owing to considerable amounts having been paid away lately for land.
