WRESTLING ITEMS

BRITISH EMPIRE TITLE A match which is bound to create more than usual interest has been arranged by tho Auckland Wrestling Association to take place at tho Town Hall on Monday evoning next. The contestants will be George Walker and Sam Clapham, and the title of heavy-weight champion of the British Empire will be involved. Clapham claims to be the holder, stating that he won tho championship in England. Walker, formerly a Canadian, but who has resided in Auckland for tho past three years, also lays claim to the title, and the forthcoming bout will definitely decide tho matter. Clapham is the ex-light-heavy-weight champion of the world, having won tho title from Ted Thyo in Australia in 1926. He lost it again to Thye the following year. Among the men Clapham had defeated are Al. Karasick, Mike Yokel and M. Ludecke. Karasick gained a points decision over Walker in a contest in Auckland earlier in the present season. Owing to an abuse of the privilege, the Auckland Wrestling Association has been compelled to reverse its decision to admit boys free to matches in the Town Hall in future. Boys accompanied by their fathers were formerly admitted without charge on the understanding that they were not to occupy a chair. "Argument," Waitoa, writes:—Will you please tell me who holds tho heavyweight wrestling championship of tho world, and when, how and whero it was won ? There are three or four claimants to the title, but the New York State Commission awarded it to Jim Londos about two years ago. Londos is prepared to meet all-comers at any time and place. Other claimants to tho title wrestlo only in certain circuits where they are billed by tho promoters as world's champions. The New York State Commission is tho only reliable authority to take as a guide— Athletic Editor. |
