AMATEUR ATHLETICS

HARRIER CLUBS' EVENTS RELAY RACE TO PAPAKURA CLOSE OF SEASON AT HAND Although the harrier season is now rapidly drawing to a close, good musters were again tho order last Saturday when the various clubs decided events. Cold showers made conditions uncomfortable at times, particularly.in the Calliope Club's long relay race, the runners finding tho going very hard in the long, open stretches around Papatootoe and Manurewa. Nevertheless, in this event a new standard was set and all time records were broken. Over (he final five miles to Papnkura thorn was a great tussle between Whitmoro and Andrews, but in the finish the first-named prevailed, and gained a victory for Ilia team in 2h 3m Bs. Each team comprised four men, who each ran about five miles, the winning members being W. Whilmore, W. McCombie, R. Headland and A. Davis. The Technical Club started its run from Whitworth Road, Mount Eden, and the trail then led round tho Three Kings to Mount Roskill and back, a distance of about six miles. Tho pace was easy throughout, but tho run-in over 300 yards was an exciting contest, L. McDonald winning by inches from Darbyshire and Knight. The' Lynndale Club decided the junior championship over a four-miles course, which started and finished at tho Avondale racecourse. W. Fowlds, tho winner, proved a promising runner. He led practically all tho way and won by a comfortable margin from Baker and Pirritt. The Papatoetoe harriers held a good six-miles run across country, after which the run-in was won by R. Bent from W- Bent and E. Littler.

Most of tho clubs will hold their filial runs of tho season next Saturday. Technical will conduct a field day on the reserve at Missipn Bay and running events from 100 yards to one mile and the usual jumping and lield events will be decided. The University and Lynndale Clubs will play their annual Rugby match at Avondaie.

Southern centres still have several big events to decide, the most important in tho South Island being the annual 12-milos Teinuka to Timaru road race, while at Wellington the 10-miles Vosseller Shield race and the Bennett Memorial road race will be run on the next two Saturdays.
