ATHENAEUM CUP DEBATE

WIN FOR PAPATOETOE The debating contest for the Athenaeum Cup was advanced a further stage last evening, when the Papatoetoe Debating Club met Marist. Old Boys on the motion, " That Stato interference in industry should be reduced to a minimum." Messrs. C. J Mahon, E. H. Burton and S. J. E. Closey represented Papatoetoe, while Messrs. W. A. Dowd, J. Carroll and Dr. A. O'Brien spoke for Marist Old Boys. Papatoetoe, which took the affirmative, won by 243 points to 234. The contest has now reached a very interesting stage, this win giving Papatoetoe the lead in section A of the competition. The team has three wins to its credit, Leys Institute boing second, with two wins and one loss, followed by W.E.A., with one win and two losses. This evening St. John's College, the leading team in section B, will meeL Training College. Tho final of the contest will be held in tho Y.M.C.A. hall on September 27, on the motion, " That tho United States and Great Britain have a common destiny." Thia debate will be broadcast by IYA.
