MOUNT EVEREST
BRITISH EXPEDITION ARRANGEMENTS IN HAND (Received September 5, 5.25 p.m.) British Wireless. RUGBY, Sept. 4 The news of the fresh attempt which is to be made by British climbers next year to conquer Mount Everest was announced in a letter to the press from the Royal Geographical Society. This was signed by Admiral Sir William Goodenough, president of tho society, and Brigadier-General Bruce, who was the leader -of the 1924 expedition. v General Bruce hopes that by the beginning of May the expedition will be well up the mountain. The attempts to climb Everest began with a reconnaissance expedition in 1921. This was followed in 1922, 1924. and 1925 by further ventures, but up to the present the mountain has proved unconquerable. It was in 1924 that Messrs. G. L. Mallory and A. C. Irvine lost their lives in an attempt to conquer the last 1000 ft. of the ascent. It was established beyond doubt that they had reached an altitude of 28,000 ft., but the manner of their death could only be conjectured.
