EXTRACTS FROM THE.HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zhaiajtd Hkraijj of September 5, 1882 hThe character. of the British military operations in Egypt is assuming magnified proportions. It is now becoming plain that England is committed to a difficult and costly war in Egypt," and that, the vote of credit asked for by Mr. Gladstone some time ago will, as we anticipated at the time, fall far short of the actual expense involved. Our cablegrams this morning state that an additional force of five thousand men is under orders to proceed to Egypt. This force is intended to set Sir Evelyn Wood's brigade at- liberty to join Sir Garnet Wolseley's division. Until the arrival of reinforcements at Ismailia it is not probable that active operations against the enemy will be resumed. Sir George M. O'Rorke has been sue- . cessful in obtaining from the Government the means of repairing the Auckland ana Onehnnga main road. The people along that road will have every reason to thank the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the persistent energy which i brought abont this result. Further serious rioting took place in Dublin last evening, and some difficulty was experienced in restoring order. The military were again called out. to clear the streets, and, in several cases, were compelled to charge the mob with fix*" bayonets. The Rotomahana brought down on Saturday night to Thames the first batch ot 77 Lincolnshire settlers for Messrs. Gran and Foster's Te Aroha settlement. A large number proceeded to Te Aroha this corning in the new steamer Waitoa, ajid the remainder will follow on Wednesday. The Union Company's new steamship Wairarapa, which left, London on July 1?> has arrived in Melbourne. She made ? £ voyage in 45 days four hours' actual steaming.
