GALE IN CANTERBURY
COUNTRY .DISTRICTS SUFFER POWER POLES BLOWN DOWN MANY AREAS IN DARKNESS [by telegraph—mass association] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday A north-westerly gale swept Canterbury Plains to-day. In country districts electric transmission poles were blown over and many districts were in darkness to-night. In Christchurch the wind reached a velocity of over 60 miles an hour. , In the afternoon a cyclist was blown off his machine in a suburban street and was admitted to hospital suffering from injuries to his shoulder. On a farm at Halswell, five miles from Christchurch, the wind lifted the iron roof of a shed and carried it 20 yards. Thirty or forty poles in the Malvern area were blown down, power being cut off from two o'clock in the afternoon. Repair gangs restored power to about half the area to-night. Dust storms from the parched country swept the Methven district, where trees were uprooted and power lines cariied away. Tho wind changed to the south-west this evening and rain threatened.
