He received a tremendous reception when he finished. When Madame Galli-Curci followed to sing two English songs the audience expressed their delight in no small measure. Hoping the lights would appear, she carried on from item fo itom until the end of the programme, and then she walked in with a torch and sat down at the piano to play her own accompaniment for an encore number. She was warmly applauded. "The people were very kind to us, and we appreciated it highly," she said after her somewhat trying experience. The concert ended before the lights were restored.
